Kevan Wylie qualified in medicine in Liverpool in 1985 and went on to postgraduate training in London achieving the Diploma in Therapy with Couples (1993) and Diploma in Sexual Medicine (1994). He obtained his doctorate MD in couples sex therapy in 1999. He is an Associate Member of both BAUS & the RCOG and a Fellow of the RCPsych. Obtaining his first consultancy in Sheffield in 1995, he went on to a full time post in sexual medicine in June 1999. Dr. Wylie now works across two trusts as Clinical Lead for Porterbrook clinic and Consultant Lead for andrology (urology) at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. He is supported by five full time nurses and therapists across both Trusts as well as numerous accredited part-time clinicians from various clinical backgrounds including psychotherapists, counselors, doctors and nurses and researchers.

The Porterbrook clinic, established in 1974 is one of the oldest NHS services and provides psychosexual and relationship psychotherapy as well as a comprehensive assessment and treatment service for all sexual dysfunctions. Kevan Wylie is Regional Director of the gender identity clinic provided for North Trent. The clinic also runs a MSc that Dr Wylie is Course Director (Sheffield Hallam University) and provides training in human sexuality for undergraduate medical students at the University of Sheffield. The clinic has been involved in pioneering sexological research projects involving men, women and couples.

The andrology service at RHH offers a wide range of treatments for men with sexual problems within the Directorate of Urology. Together the two services receive around 1200 referrals a year for the wide range of sexual problems in women and men. There are close working relationships with gynaecology, family planning, endocrine and GUM services as well as primary care. Two leading campaign groups have praised Sheffield’s pioneering sexual problem services for men as a national example of best practice. The Impotence Association and Men’s Health Forum have joined forces to launch the Standing Up For Men Campaign to promote the overall sexual health and well being of men. Dr Wylie is a trustee of the Sexual Dysfunction Alliance, acts as an advisor to several Department of Health groups, advised the LCD/DCA on the Gender Recognition Act and sits on the Parliamentary Forum on transsexualism.

Dr Wylie also sits on several national and international committees including BSPOGA (Chairman 2005-2007) & the RSM (President, Section of Sexuality & Sexual Health 2005-2007) and serves on scientific committees for several international meetings. Kevan leads the psychosexual subgroup of the scientific committee of ESSM and is Chairman of the International Scientific Committee for the World Association for Sexual Health (WAS) meetings in 2007 (Sydney) & 2009 (Goteborg). Dr Wylie chairs the intercollegiate committee on standards of care for transgender people in the UK. Within Europe, Kevan is General Secretary for the European Federation of Sexology (EFS) and acted as President of the EFS Congress in Brighton 2004. Internationally, Kevan is a member of the 20 member advisory committee for WAS where he represents the UK regarding the diverse needs of sexual health, sex education and psychosexual & sexual medicine services. Sitting on five international journal editorial boards, Kevan also served for seven years as Editor-in-Chief of Sexual & Relationship Therapy between 2000 & 2006. Over his career, Kevan has published over 100 articles and book chapters including 65 peer reviewed publications.
